Man signing document

The Library offers notary services, which are free of charge. You are always welcome to make a donation to the Library in exchange for these services! The Library notary is typically available Monday - Saturday during normal business hours. It is recommended that patrons seeking notary services call ahead at (502)477-8137 to verify availability.

Library Notary Guidelines:

  • Valid photo identification is required of any patron seeking notary service. If you're unsure whether your form of ID is approved, please check here first.
  • The notary cannot pre-date or post-date an action, prepare a legal document, give advice on legal matters, give instructions on how to sign or fill out a document, or notarize documents in which they have a personal interest.
  • Since the notary must be able to read and understand what he or she has been asked to notarize, documents in any language other than English will not be notarized at the Library.
  • Notary service is not available for medically sensitive documents (including immunization or vaccine forms), deeds, depositions, mortgages, or other real estate closing documents. For help finding a notary who can perform these services, check here
  • The Library will not provide witnesses. In order to serve as a witness, the witness must personally know the person whose document is being notarized and must be in possession of valid photo identification.
  • The notary will not provide service if a patron, document, or circumstance of the request for notary service raises any issue of authenticity, ambiguity, doubt, or uncertainty for the notary. In this event, the Library notary may, at his or her sole discretion, decline to provide notary service.
  • The notary can, at any time or for any reason, decline to notarize a document.
